You Aren’t Obsessed Enough

The weekly newsletter is back: If you truly want to be successful in anything— you have to be absolutely obsessed with it. Do you think Kobe was only kind of interested in basketball? Kanye only dabbled a little bit in music? Steve Jobs was just mildly intrigued by product design? Of course not. And look at where their careers have taken them.

You Aren’t Obsessed Enough

“I’m on the verge of giving up. I’m burnt out. Nothing has panned out like I hoped it would. Any advice before I throw in the towel?”

Hey— I get it.

Running a business is no joke.

It takes a lot of energy to make it work.

So, if you’re feeling burnt out for one reason or another, I want to ask you two questions:

  1. Why Do You Do What You Do?

Did you get into the creative field because it speaks to your soul?

Or are you doing it because it seemed like the trendy thing to do?

I hesitate to use the word ‘passion’ because I think it’s overused and it makes a lot of people question if they even have a real passion for anything.

For some people, their ‘why’ is around their passion for the actual thing they do– like making awesome videos and getting better with each one.

For others, their ‘why’ is focused on giving their family the best possible life they can, and that alone keeps them moving forward.

So whatever it is, you first need to figure out why you started in the first place.

I know it’s a painful question to ask— and there’s a chance it shakes your entire reality… but I promise you’ll be happier once you do.

We tend to make ourselves believe that “everything is fine, I love this”… when deep down, we’re questioning if this ‘thing’ truly is what we care about.

Although the ultimate goal is creative freedom, fulfillment, personal success… everyone has to go through some uncomfortable moments on their journey…

And your ‘why’ is what propels you forward.

You don’t have to love every single thing you do.

But you should at least know why you do it.

  1. Are You Obsessed?

If you truly want to be successful in anything— you have to be absolutely obsessed with it.

Do you think Kobe was only kind of interested in basketball?

Kanye only dabbled a little bit in music?

Steve Jobs was just mildly intrigued by product design?

Of course not. And look at where their careers have taken them.

Can you look in the mirror and tell yourself that you are truly obsessed with making this ‘thing’ work?

Not just when it’s fun and exciting (and easy)…

But even through the lowest lows… are you still obsessed with making it work?

In my opinion, obsession is the #1 difference between those who excel in building a career that they love… and those who don’t.

For Kobe, Kanye, Jobs… it wasn’t just about the end result, or the money, or the recognition for their work.

They were obsessed with the PROCESS of creation.

You could even call it a delusional obsession.

They weren’t worried about ‘coloring’ within the lines and doing what everyone else was doing…

They were on their own path and they didn’t care if someone thought they were unrealistic or straight-up crazy.

Arnold Schwarzenegger left his home in Austria and came to America with a delusional obsession that he would be the best bodybuilder of all time.

After winning both the Mr. Olympia and Mr. Universe titles in body building several times, he shifted his obsession to movies, then eventually becoming Governor of California.

Whether you like him or not, that is the ultimate “zero to hero” story we can all be inspired by.

So today… I want you take a walk.

Throw on some headphones, play some ambient music or something that’s not intrusive…

And think about what you’re currently working towards.

Ask yourself, “Am I obsessed?”

If you’re not— what element of your work can you become obsessed with?

Just because you aren’t obsessed now, doesn’t mean you're in the wrong line of work…

More likely than not, you’ve just been viewing it as a job for so long that you FORGOT it was once an obsession.

So rekindle that feeling you had when you first started.

Become obsessed.

Your New Go-To Lighting Source

We’ve partnered with Westcott to get you 10% off all of their products when you use code “FTF1024”.

One of our favorites from Westcott is their Scrim Jim Cine Kit. It’s perfect for creating a smooth, even light source— inside or outside.

We recently used it on a quick product shoot in the studio and I love the way it turned out:

A scrim gives you a nice, even lighting. Something you can’t typically achieve with a traditional softbox.

And with the Wescott Scrim Jim Cine you can easily adjust the size and intensity of the scrim itself which isn’t typical of your usual scrim.

You’re also able to attach different types of fabrics and find the exact look you need.

Whether you're shooting portraits, product, or anything in between, a well-placed scrim can seriously elevate the look of your footage.

And if you’re in the market for a scrim, Westcott’s is the best.

So go check it out and don’t forget you can get 10% off when you use code “FTF1024”!

And if you’re in the market for something else, you can view all their products HERE.
