Why You Aren’t Getting More Done

Why You Aren’t Getting More Done

“I just don’t feel inspired during my work hours and by the end of the day, I’ve made little to no progress on what I need to get done.”

Yep, I’ve been there.

I’ve gone through seasons of my life where I just didn’t feel at the top of my game creatively and man, was it frustrating.

But because I’ve gone through those periods of my life, I’ve also learned how to get myself out of a funk when I’m not feeling like my output is where it should be.

Here are my 2 tips to making the most of your time at work:

  1. Choose Work That Inspires You

Now I’m not going to sit here and tell you I love every single minute of my work hours and that I’m always in a constant flow state of creativity–Because it’s simply not true.

I do things I don’t enjoy everyday.

But that’s the reality of a fulfilling and “successful” life.

The vast majority of people live far below their potential because they’ve become accustomed to always being comfortable and never being uncomfortable.

If you want to get far in life, do things that others aren’t willing to do.

On the flip side, you also need to be doing work that helps you get in a flow state where hours can go by and you’ve hardly noticed because you’re locked in on your work.

I think everyone has specific zones of genius where certain things just come naturally and it often feels ‘effortless’ on your part.

Maybe you have always been complimented on your writing ability or your video editing skills.

Whatever it is, lean more into that if possible.

Now this isn’t to say you should only be doing things that feel natural to you.

You should be pushing yourself and spending time on the constant improvement of your craft.

Maybe videography doesn’t come naturally to you–That doesn’t mean you can’t be amazing at it.

The point is, when you enjoy what you do, the more likely you’ll naturally spend your time working on things that will actually move the needle forward in your business and life.

  1. Work In A Space That Inspires You

Let’s get real, does our work space affect our productivity?

I say, yes, it does.

But I also don’t like playing the victim card and blaming our desk setup for why we aren’t getting anything done.

The first thing that comes to mind is the iconic photo of Jeff Bezos working at his makeshift desk in the early days of Amazon that was literally a door flipped on its side with four 4×4’s as the legs.

Based on the behemoth Amazon has become in the last 25 years since that photo was taken, I’d say Jeff spent his time wisely working at that desk.

My own desk for years was a cheap Ikea desk with a couple crappy second-hand monitors.

So what I’m saying is, if you can’t afford to have this amazing desk set up, don’t fret.

Refer back to my first tip until you can afford the space that you want 🙂

But if you have some room in your budget, it might be time for an upgrade.

The lighting in your space can greatly affect your mood when working.

Having the ability to stand up while working with a sit/stand desk can boost your energy and keep you working longer.

Having a dedicated storage spot for everything to keep things tidy and organized can increase your mental focus and keep you from getting distracted.

Lastly, having that little touch of ‘home’ or personalization that adds a sense of design to your space so it feels like you and your vibe, can greatly influence how productive you are.

Now with all this being said, I realize everyone is at a different stage of life and in varying circumstances.

You may spend your work days at the public library or at your kitchen table.

I don’t care where you’re starting from, you can have your very own zero to hero story if you stick with it.

Use your vision of what you’re ultimately hoping to achieve to carry you through to the end.

And don’t forget to take a photo of where you started so you can remind yourself how far you’ve come😉

Remember, it’s not about having one insanely productive work day, it’s about the constant pursuit of winning your tasks everyday.

Keep the momentum going!

You got this👊🏻

CREATOR SPOTLIGHT

From Music Major to Videographer

The story of Ben Broll

My name is Ben Broll and I specialize in Real Estate Videography in the Windsor Essex County Area in Canada.

Five years ago, I ventured into entrepreneurship as a real estate photographer, never imagining I'd delve into videography.

After 2 years of doing real estate photography on my own, I joined RE/MAX firm, Angie Goulet & Associates. Here, I had the opportunity to experiment and explore new ways to advertise real estate. As my video skills improved I started to love video more and I preferred it over photography, and with a background in music (thanks to my music degree) blending video and music became a passion.

I'm truly fortunate to have an incredible boss who provided me with all the necessary training, including Full Time Filmmaker (FTF). Without such courses, I wouldn’t be where I am today. They enabled me to craft compelling stories through my video work, master audio blending, and utilize transitions effectively, captivating the audience with every frame.

What advice would you give to someone getting started?

The advice I would give to someone getting started in filmmaking is to always try to push yourself and try new things. It's easy to fall into a routine as a real estate videographer, but stepping out of your comfort zone, and embracing new ideas, yields your finest work.

I'd like to share a couple of links with you all to illustrate that anything is achievable when you consistently challenge yourselves.
