The Importance Of Telling Your Story

The Importance of Telling Your Story

“So, what do you do?”

You might find this question fun to answer or you may even dread it.

Either way, this one question has the potential to completely change your life.

Sounds dramatic I know, but hear me out.

When you hear that question, what is the motivating feeling you have while answering?

I want you to really dive inward on this.

Do you enjoy the ego boost this question gives you to share with others all your accomplishments?

Are you overly trying to impress the other person and get their approval?

Maybe your resume doesn’t have much to say but you feel the need to talk about your future plans to make up the difference from where you are currently.

Or maybe you just view it as a casual question and don’t think much of it.

I can personally say I’ve experienced all of these.

But as soon as I learned the importance of sharing my story with others, my whole perspective changed.

I went from focusing on myself and how others thought of me, to focusing on reaching more people that I could serve and help.

I recently sat down with my business partner and friend, Connor Dehlin, who is a master communicator and story teller.

He literally helps others leverage the opportunity that comes from the question, “What do you do?”

Here are 3 questions to ask yourself so you can be better prepared to share your story and reach more people:

  1. Who Is Your Audience?

You first need to define who “your people” are.

Who are you able to provide the absolute best value to?

What are the demographics of your people?

What problems are they experiencing that you have a solution for?

Remember, “You are most qualified to help the person you once were.”

  1. What Makes You An Expert?

Look at your life experience and the skills you’ve been able to develop.

What makes you the go-to expert?

What are you most qualified to guide someone to accomplishing or resolving?

We all have unique skills that we might have not even considered a viable career option.

Don’t shy away from something that your heart is drawn to.

Take your time and be open minded with your answers.

  1. Why Should People Care?

When it comes down to it, why does what you do matter?

Don’t sell yourself short here.

Your work matters, so don’t be afraid to share with others how it impacts those you serve.

And if you really want to make a memorable impression, be genuine with your response!

If serving “your people” hypes you up and gets you pumped, then show it in your response!

Your real and raw energy will translate to more of “your people” being referred to you.
