Taming the Flame of Filmmaker Burnout

Taming the Flame of Filmmaker Burnout

This past week, YouTuber Marques Brownlee addressed the elephant in the room–Why are so many OG creators choosing to step back from YouTube?

In recent weeks and months, creators such as Matti Haapoja, Leon Hendrix, The Game Theorists and others have expressed some form of burnout and a desire to step back from full time content creation.

Marques, having observed this trend, decided to share his perspective on the matter. Acknowledging that being a YouTuber is a dream job, he emphasized that it's crucial not to overlook the fact that, as Tom Scott eloquently put it, “a dream job is still a job.”

Marques highlighted that creative jobs don't scale like regular jobs, and as creators scale up to address new opportunities, they often find themselves spending less time on the original aspect of their job that they fell in love with–Being creative.

This is why keeping your original goal at top of mind at all times is critical. Why did you start making videos in the first place? What brought you that sense of fulfillment in the beginning? And do you still feel the same about your work right now?

Whatever lesson you take away from this, remember you can’t pour from an empty cup. Reacting to algorithmic changes or respecting the unusual creative requests of your client might seem like just another day on the job, but the more things we give into that drain us, the more likely we are to reach burnout.

So trust your instincts, nurture your well-being, and let go of the fear of leaving something on the table. Life's too short to be tethered by fear and stress. Content creation IS a dream job, so let’s keep it that way!

From Swamp Living to Full Time Filmmaking

The story of Trevor McDonald

Trevor McDonald of Reel Time Films

What are you willing to sacrifice to chase your dreams? Only 4 years ago, Trevor McDonald and his wife were both living in a camper with no access to power, water or internet. Oh and did we mention his yard was an actual swamp? Despite his surroundings, Trevor persevered through it all and implemented what he learned inside of Full Time Filmmaker while taking regular drives to McDonalds just so he could upload or deliver films to his clients. After years of trial and error, Trevor has become a full time filmmaker specializing in wedding videos. In the words of Trevor: “
It certainly was not an overnight success for me. It took me 8 years to get to where I am now. Don’t give up. Be patient and work hard and this industry will eventually reward you.”
