Last Saturday, we hosted our first Happy Creatiive quarterly workshop.

I took the stage for about an hour and talked about “delusional obsession” with your life and career— something I’ll talk more on next week.

But it was also an opportunity for me to reflect a bit on the last decade or so.

From working at a minimum wage job I absolutely dreaded, pursuing videography and bringing in about $1000/ month

To owning my time, using my creative skillset to build and do whatever I’m passionate about, and generate 3-4x my old monthly salary
. in a single day.

And the craziest part? Contrary to what my mom says, I’m not special.

I’m actually very, very average.

There’s nothing I’ve done in the last 10 years that you or any of the 200,000+ creators who read this email couldn’t do as well.

So, I decided to put together the top three things I’ve learned (and done) since I started on this journey. I hope it resonates with you in some way or another:

  1. You have to show up, no matter what.

I’d be lying if I told you that every single day, I was motivated.

If you’ve ever started your own business, you’re probably familiar with the excitement that every entrepreneur feels in the early days.

You’re optimistic, you’ve got a great idea, everyone you’ve told has given you words of encouragement
but you have no idea how difficult things are about to get.

It’s inevitable— you’re going to have good days, and you’re going to have bad ones. Hell
you might even have a lot more bad days than good days

But you have to show up.

Way too many people are constantly looking for a new idea or concept that they haven’t heard before that will help them “be successful”.

But I really think they’re just looking for that dopamine hit that gives them that sudden surge of motivation.

And as soon as that fizzles out, they’re on to the next course or book that will “solve all their problems.”

But truly successful people understand that success is found in the mundane–The boring tasks that you do day-in and day-out no matter how you’re “feeling”.

There’s motivation
 then there’s discipline.

  1. Passion = Energy

If you aren’t truly passionate about the work itself, you need to find something to be passionate about.

Whether it’s the creative aspect or the connecting with other people or the excitement that comes from growing and building something of your own

Whatever it is— let that passion be the energizer bunny that keeps you going on both the good days and the bad days.

And if you can’t find anything that you’re passionate about in your work, then it might be time to go all-in on something that does speak to that passion.

In last week’s newsletter, I talked about obsession.

Not “infatuation”
 not “temporary enthusiasm”

I’m talking about delusional obsession.

If you truly love what you do, you’re gonna stick with it— even when it gets difficult.

Why?

Because obsessed people don’t give up.

They solve problems, they practice, they improve, they grow

and they LOVE what they do, no matter what.

  1. What You Focus On, Grows

Focusing on the highest-value activities is something I’ve always struggled with.

I have a tendency to move from one thing to the next really quickly— which, don’t get me wrong, can actually be a bit of a strength.

But if discouragement in one thing is all it takes for you set that aside and start something new, pretty soon you have a dozen different things that require your attention.

Let’s say that in a 3-month period, you have 5 different things that you’re working on simultaneously
. but there’s only one of you.

If you split 100% of your energy 5 different ways, each thing is actually only getting 20% of your attention.

But if you focused on just one of them
it would grow at 5x the rate.

You’re allowed to try new things, to experiment a little bit

Just make sure you’re not always chasing the shiny penny.

And if one of those things are draining your energy— physically or mentally— but it’s not providing for you in the way it should

Don’t be afraid to cut it loose.

Focus.

You got this.
