Last Saturday, we hosted our first Happy Creatiive quarterly workshop.
I took the stage for about an hour and talked about âdelusional obsessionâ with your life and careerâ something Iâll talk more on next week.
But it was also an opportunity for me to reflect a bit on the last decade or so.
From working at a minimum wage job I absolutely dreaded, pursuing videography and bringing in about $1000/ monthâŠ
To owning my time, using my creative skillset to build and do whatever Iâm passionate about, and generate 3-4x my old monthly salaryâŠ. in a single day.
And the craziest part? Contrary to what my mom says, Iâm not special.
Iâm actually very, very average.
Thereâs nothing Iâve done in the last 10 years that you or any of the 200,000+ creators who read this email couldnât do as well.
So, I decided to put together the top three things Iâve learned (and done) since I started on this journey. I hope it resonates with you in some way or another:
You have to show up, no matter what.
Iâd be lying if I told you that every single day, I was motivated.
If youâve ever started your own business, youâre probably familiar with the excitement that every entrepreneur feels in the early days.
Youâre optimistic, youâve got a great idea, everyone youâve told has given you words of encouragement⊠but you have no idea how difficult things are about to get.
Itâs inevitableâ youâre going to have good days, and youâre going to have bad ones. Hell⊠you might even have a lot more bad days than good daysâŠ
But you have to show up.
Way too many people are constantly looking for a new idea or concept that they havenât heard before that will help them âbe successfulâ.
But I really think theyâre just looking for that dopamine hit that gives them that sudden surge of motivation.
And as soon as that fizzles out, theyâre on to the next course or book that will âsolve all their problems.â
But truly successful people understand that success is found in the mundaneâThe boring tasks that you do day-in and day-out no matter how youâre âfeelingâ.
Thereâs motivation⊠then thereâs discipline.
Passion = Energy
If you arenât truly passionate about the work itself, you need to find something to be passionate about.
Whether itâs the creative aspect or the connecting with other people or the excitement that comes from growing and building something of your ownâŠ
Whatever it isâ let that passion be the energizer bunny that keeps you going on both the good days and the bad days.
And if you canât find anything that youâre passionate about in your work, then it might be time to go all-in on something that does speak to that passion.
In last weekâs newsletter, I talked about obsession.
Not âinfatuationâ⊠not âtemporary enthusiasmââŠ
Iâm talking about delusional obsession.
If you truly love what you do, youâre gonna stick with itâ even when it gets difficult.
Why?
Because obsessed people donât give up.
They solve problems, they practice, they improve, they growâŠ
and they LOVE what they do, no matter what.
What You Focus On, Grows
Focusing on the highest-value activities is something Iâve always struggled with.
I have a tendency to move from one thing to the next really quicklyâ which, donât get me wrong, can actually be a bit of a strength.
But if discouragement in one thing is all it takes for you set that aside and start something new, pretty soon you have a dozen different things that require your attention.
Letâs say that in a 3-month period, you have 5 different things that youâre working on simultaneouslyâŠ. but thereâs only one of you.
If you split 100% of your energy 5 different ways, each thing is actually only getting 20% of your attention.
But if you focused on just one of them⊠it would grow at 5x the rate.
Youâre allowed to try new things, to experiment a little bitâŠ
Just make sure youâre not always chasing the shiny penny.
And if one of those things are draining your energyâ physically or mentallyâ but itâs not providing for you in the way it shouldâŠ
Donât be afraid to cut it loose.
Focus.
You got this.
